The fire was reported to ACT Emergency Services at 1.39pm and three pumpers arrived at the Lithgow Street property to find four vehicles on fire.
Firefighters used a foam solution to extinguish the fire which began in a car baler before spreading to nearby vehicles.
ACT Policing officers arrived at the recycling plant around 2pm although an ACT Emergency Services Agency spokesman said the fire was not considered suspicious.
Firefighters are now separating the cars and monitoring the plant for any remaining hot spots.
One passer-by said he saw black smoke rising from the recycling plant while driving on Hindmarsh Drive.
One woman who was waiting outside the plant to drop off recycling goods said ‘I guess it’s just not our lucky day”.
