Twelve Brumbies joined new coach Ewen McKenzie's Wallabies squad in Sydney on Monday night two days after losing the Super Rugby final to the Waikato Chiefs in Hamilton.

McKenzie will trim the 40-man training group to 30 before selecting his team to play against the All Blacks at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, August 17.

Matt Toomua, Tevita Kuridrani, Nic White, Scott Fardy and Scott Sio are chasing their first Wallabies caps.

New Zealand has had a stranglehold on the Bledisloe Cup since 2002.

McKenzie has cast a wide net to find players capable reclaiming the Cup after replacing Robbie Deans in the top job last month.

Former Wallabies five-eighth and ACT backs coach Larkham was adamant the Brumbies' outstanding Super Rugby campaign deserved to be rewarded with an international opportunity.

''I think it's important they're rewarded and the Kiwi players will respect [the Brumbies players],'' Larkham said.

''We've shown a lot of growth as a team and individually and Wallabies selection is warranted with Ewen in charge. Realistically most of our guys should still be in the 30-man squad.''

One of the most talked-about selections will be the Test resurrection of Queensland pivot Quade Cooper.

Sacked Wallabies coach Deans refused to pick Cooper for the series against the British and Irish Lions in June and July. McKenzie is set to reinstate by his Queensland No. 10 despite a strong challenge from Brumbies star Toomua.

''It's good Ewen has finally picked the three form fly-halves in Australia in Quade, Matt and [NSW's] Bernard Foley,'' World Cup-winner Larkham said.

''He will probably go with Quade, they've had success together and understand each other.

''But I'd love to see Matt in there because I think he adds a lot and at that Test level I think he would be one the best international players in Australia.''

The Brumbies' 12-strong contingent is a sign of the club's turnaround over the past two years.

When coach Jake White took the Brumbies' coaching reins, the team boasted just three incumbent Wallabies.

Since then captain Ben Mowen, Jesse Mogg, Christian Lealiifano and Joseph Tomane have made their international debuts.

Stephen Moore and Ben Alexander have been mainstays while Sio and Peter Kimlin were also part of the squad for the series against the Lions.

The Brumbies players joined the Wallabies after a hectic travel schedule.

They have been in three countries, four time zones and travelled almost 35,000 kilometres in the past month to earn a berth in the Super Rugby final.

They fell at the final hurdle and lost to the Chiefs 27-22 in an absorbing championship match, but the young squad proved it was ready to take on the best.

The team's Wallabies representatives had to fly from New Zealand to Sydney and on to Canberra on Monday morning before returning to Sydney that afternoon for Test duties.
