The chase began after police found an unregistered white Mitsubishi ute driving along Southern Cross Drive in Latham about 9pm.
Police say their number plate recognition vehicle, RAPID, detected that the car was unregistered.
Officers pulled the 39-year-old man over in Scullin, but police allege he abandoned his car and fled on foot.
He was chased and later found hiding in the backyard of a nearby home.
Police allege the man became violent when they tried to arrest him, punching an officer multiple times in the head.
Paramedics treated the officer for cuts and abrasions to his head.
The man, who lives in Latham, was taken to the ACT Watch House and charged with resisting arrest, driving whilst disqualified, and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
He was bailed and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on December 4.
