The owners of the Canberra Walk-in Aviary developed the aviary as a way to share their extensive collection of feathered friends with visitors.
It is their mission to allow visitors to interact directly with the birds, so that they might enjoy them up-close - and perhaps also learn a thing or two about these wonderful and fascinating creatures.
Visitors to the aviary will be immersed in the flutter of more than 550 birds representing 57 different species from Australia and around the world.
Species on display include finches, doves and quail, along with a wide variety of parrots, such as the cheeky and colourful rainbow lorikeet. Sadly, a number of parrot species are threatened in Australia and their numbers are being reduced by habit destruction and illegal trading.
The Canberra Walk-in Aviary would like to remind children that they can make a difference in the conservation of these beautiful birds.
They could start a school holiday project by observing the parrot patterns in their area, or putting a bird-feeder in the backyard - they should get their parents' permission first.
Still, there's no easier way to enjoy the winged wonders of the world than by paying a visit to the Canberra Walk-In Aviary.
The aviary is open seven days a week.
