The Canberra Organic Growers Society has previously said its Cook garden alone had a waiting list of nearly 20 people and plots rarely became available because they were tightly held once secured.
Yesterday, the government put out a call for Canberrans to put their hands up for a community garden.
The deputy director-general of environment and sustainability in the ACT's Economic Development Directorate, Ben Ponton, said he wanted people to help choose the locations of new community gardens. He issued the Community Gardens in the ACT discussion paper, outlining the criteria for community groups and developers to review prospective sites based on location size, availability and the level of community interest.
''Community input will be one of the most valuable aspects to help determine the most beneficial placement of community gardens,'' he said.
There are currently 14 community gardens across the ACT.
The government has not identified a set number of community gardens.
''It would be good to have community gardens in each district or even suburb by suburb,'' Mr Ponton said.
