A defence department spokeswoman said the live-ammunition exercises would be carried out throughout the day as part of regular training at the department's facility.
Residents as far away as Tuggeranong and over the border in Queanbeyan had reported hearing the explosions.
The defence spokeswoman said the weather conditions producing large amounts of cloud cover meant the sound from the exercises were travelling further than normal.
