Bateman was part of an all-Raiders second row Lions coach Wayne Bennett named on Wednesday for their clash against Tonga in Hamilton on Saturday.
Elliott Whitehead joins him on an edge, while Canberra co-captain Josh Hodgson was named at hooker.
Future Raiders half George Williams was named on an extended bench, with Bennett preferring ex-Manly playmaker Jackson Hastings in the No.7 jersey.
The Lions play two Tests against New Zealand, in Auckland and Christchurch, following the match against the Tonga Invitational XIII, before finishing their tour off against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on November 16.
Canberra back-up-hooker Siliva Havili and half Ata Hingano have been named in Tonga's starting side.
Bateman has been a revelation in his first NRL season and was named second-rower of the year.
He's adding his Lions debut to his 16 Test caps for England.
The Great Britain series has given him the opportunity to put the Raiders' grand final loss to the Sydney Roosters behind him.
"Four more games to go. The last game we played didn't go the way we wanted, but it's one of them [where] it's been a good season for us," Bateman said.
"Just want to carry on now and get these next four wins."
Raiders prop Josh Papalii underwent scans on Wednesday for a rib injury he suffered in the first half of the grand final after he failed to finish training on Tuesday.
They cleared the Kangaroos book-end of a serious injury.
Australia coach Mal Meninga said they'd give him until the captain's run to prove his fitness to face the Kiwis in Wollongong on Friday.
"He woke up feeling pretty good so we are going to monitor him for the rest of the day," he said.
"We train [Friday], when we go through our captain's run and we'll make a decision then."
Papalii's hoping to play his first Test for Australia since the Anzac Test in 2016.
The 27-year-old opted to represent his Samoan heritage at the 2017 World Cup following the death of his grandfather.
He was named alongside fellow Raiders Jack Wighton and Nick Cotric, who will make their debuts in the centres and on the wing respectively.
Raiders fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad will make his Kiwis debut against them, having been named in the centres to cap off a boom 2019.
He made the Canberra No.1 jersey his own and was part of the Kiwis nines team that made the final of the World Cup 9s in Sydney last weekend.
Raiders outside back Bailey Simonsson was named 19th man for New Zealand.
"It was a bit of cartilage on [Papalii's] chest bone injury that happened in the grand final that is still a bit sore," Meninga said.
"He pulled up well, but as a precaution he did some scans.
"He's fine, we hope it settles down well enough, but he is keen to play.
"He wants to play, which is why we are waiting."
Raiders props Corey Horsburgh and Emre Guler have been named in the Junior Kangaroos team to play France as a curtain raiser on Friday, with Horsburgh started and Guler coming off the bench.
