Sarah de Zoeten was appointed Australia's next High Commissioner to Vanuatu on Monday, replacing Jenny Da Rin.
Ms de Zoeten - a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - is currently assistant secretary of the Office of the Pacific and has been previously posted to Port Moresby and New York.
But she has also previously served as Ms Payne's chief-of-staff, as well as the Assistant Secretary of DFAT's International Legal Branch.
Ms de Zoeten was one of six career diplomats to be promoted, as an end-of-year spree of appointments continues.
Former Vanuatu High Commissioner Jeremy Bruer was named Australia's next High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
Mr Bruer has previously served overseas as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates; deputy head of mission at the Australian Embassy in Riyadh; and second secretary at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby.
Former United Arab Emirates and ex Vanuatu High Commissioner Pablo Kang has been named as the next Ambassador to Cambodia.
Mr Kang, who was most recently assistant secretary of the Pacific Infrastructure Branch, replaces Angela Corcoran.
Dr Lachlan Strahan will become High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, replacing Roderick Brazier.
Dr Strahan is currently first assistant secretary of the South and West Asia Division. He has previously served overseas as Deputy Head of Mission of the Australian High Commission in New Delhi.
Arthur Spyrou will replace Kate Logan as Ambassador to Greece. Mr Spyrou will also be accredited to Bulgaria and Romania.
He has previously served in Nauru, Kuala Lumpar and Paris, and been director of the Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar section, the United Nations and Commonwealth Section and the Management and Corporate Strategy Section in Canberra.
Heidi Venamore will step into Mr Spyrou's role and become Australia's next Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
Ms Venamore has previously been posted to London and Baghdad, and was the head of mission in Amman in Jordan. She was most recently assistant secretary of DFAT's counter-terrorism branch.
Meanwhile Chris Wade has been named as the new chief executive of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility.
He was previously executive director of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and served on the Infrastructure Association of Queensland.
Amanda Copping has been acting in the role in recent months. Mr Wade will be based in Cairns.
Barry Broe has also been appointed as the new chief executive of the National Faster Rail Agency.
The agency was created in July to oversee the $2 billion fast rail project between Melbourne and Geelong.
Mr Broe was Queensland's coordinator-general before suddenly leaving the role in August.
