For the past four years, the former Swedish resident would run alongside her mother Helene in marathons around the world, competing in places from Paris to Istanbul and Uluru.
"We started running together when I was 10, and I never thought I'd be able to run more than five kilometres, and mum's always been running," she said.
"There's a big half-marathon in our home town in Sweden and mum asked me join her and then we started running and that's how I got into it."
Now living in Newcastle, on the other side of the world from her mother, it's been two years since the pair ran the 42km together.
The mother and daughter will reunite in April in the nation's capital to compete together in The Canberra Times Marathon Festival.
It will be the 25-year-old's 10th marathon, and said this one would be even more special with her mother flying over from Sweden to run alongside her.
"It will be just picking up where we left off," she said.
"We like to go places to run and make a holiday out of it."
There'll be an extra addition to the family group for The Canberra Times marathon with Ms Ekenstedt's husband Benjamin joining the run for his first attempt at the distance.
The pair train together every Saturday for the event, and she said they're well prepared for the run.
"I used to run by myself, and I think he wanted to spend more time with me," she said.
"He used to run after me but now he's beside me and we're at the same level.
"We've been doing shorter races together like 10km, but we've never really run something that long together, and we wanted to try something difficult."
- The Canberra Times Marathon Festival presented by Tata Consultancy Services is on from April 4 to 5. Events include 5km, 10km, half marathon, marathon and ultra marathon distances.
