New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will join Australia's national cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
It is understood the meeting will address a "trans-Tasman bubble" that would allow Kiwis and Australians to freely travel between countries.
While neither national leader has spoken publicly on the issue, New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters is very keen on the idea of the trans-Tasman bubble as both countries are "beating the crap" out of the disease.
The bubble would allow Kiwis and Australians to freely travel between countries.
Mr Peters said it would only make sense if the 14-day quarantine requirements were lifted for Australians, as well as the general ban on all entry for non-Kiwis.
New Zealand media has reported the nation's Health Director General Ashley Bloomfield saying he was in constant contact with his Australian counterparts
"One of the things that will be very important, if there is an agreement at the highest-level to have a trans-Tasman bubble, that we are working very closely with our Australian counterparts on what those key public health pillars would need to be - around how we are testing for, identifying, and isolating cases and contacts, also our position around contact tracing and our ability to exchange information smoothly," Mr Bloomfield is reported to have said.
"I'm confident we could continue that to support a trans-Tasman bubble if that's what the government wanted."
It's understood Ms Ardern will discuss the meeting at her post-cabinet press conference soon.
At last official count, New Zealand had 1487 confirmed and probably cases of COVID-19. In all 20 people had died. Australia's tally stands at 6823 cases and 95 death.
As expected the news of the Kiwi leader's involvement prompted pundits to take to social media to share their views.
Jacinda Ardern to join the national cabinet meetings here in Australia?? Hell no! She has no place in the cabinet meetings and is not welcome as far as I’m concerned.Stay on your side of the pond lady, you’re not wanted here.— Krisso (@Krisso_theOzzy) May 4, 2020
I think it’s great that Jacinda Ardern will join the national cabinet meeting. It would be good if we can create a little zone of somewhat normality between our 2 countires.— Howie (@the_howie) May 4, 2020
