Five-year-old Kishan Kamal had become trapped in a drain when he was heading home from kindergarten with his 12-year-old sister.
Once he realised he was stuck, he called out for his sister to help him but she was unable to lift him out. Passers-by had also attempted to free the young boy without success.
In the end, help came from workers at a nearby construction site, who dug and chiseled him free while Kishan sat, immobilised with earmuffs on while they worked.
A crowd of children quickly gathered to watch the rescue, as the construction workers used a front-end loader to dig him free.
The young boy's mother had by this time arrived and was holding his hand throughout the ordeal.
On standby and ready to help if needed were water-supply workers, ACT firefighters, police and ambulance officers. One man even sat in the dirt pit and chiseled a hole in the concrete drain to free the boy's feet, which had been caught.
Once his legs had been straightened, Kishan was able to be lifted out to safety and into his mother's arms. He was examined in the waiting ambulance after having been stuck for almost an hour.
