The story on the front page of The Canberra Times reported the National Capital Development Commission had plans for one industrial area in the south at Fyshwick and a second similar area in the north of Canberra. We can assume these were to become Hume and Mitchell respectively.
The commission told The Canberra Times it would be pleased to see industries established in the regions around Canberra.
The announcement followed criticism from the previous month, by speakers at an industrial development seminar that Queanbeyan would become "Canberra's industrial suburb" if industry was not developed in the ACT and was developed across the border instead.
It was also reported on the front page, Canberrans donated £194 to an appeal helping a man who had lost his hands and eyes in an explosion.
The Canberra Times launched the campaign to help Tony Van Eck.
The Canberra Boy Scouts' senior search and rescue group were to hold a dance to raise money for the appeal.
In international news, Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman called on Commonwealth countries for financial aid and resources to be sent to the country.
