"Three Kings of Sport" and Mrs Pam Jones, all of Canberra, had good reason to celebrate. They had won between them more than $1.3million.
The syndicate "The Three Kings of Sport", from Downer, won $1 million in the NSW State Lottery. Mrs Pam Jones, married with three children, won nearly $350,000 in the NSW Lotto.
For eight months she had kept playing the same numbers. "I wasn't game to give up, they just might have come up," she said.
The numbers were worked out by Mrs Jones and her sister-in-law, Rita Jones, who shared a coupon until Rita moved to the Gold Coast. Pam notified her sister-in-law with the good news.
Also dominating the front page on this day, was a photo of Brian Dowling, as John Bunyan and Colin Slater, as the Pilgrim, at the dress rehearsal for "Pilgrim's Progress", presented by the Canberra Opera Society.
