Roller Disco Brunch is rolling into Canberra (pun intended) and organiser The Brunch Club is encouraging its roller skate-loving people to tease their hair and deck themselves in 1980s leotards, tights, sparkles and neon.
"Rollerskating, especially now during COVID, has just gotten super popular," organiser Demi Montgomery says.
"Even on TikTok and all these other social media outlets, people have been kind of getting back to that 80s and 90s vibe, where it's cool again and there's a lot more roller skating.
"I think for an event you have to come up with a concept that people want.
"People love pizza, people love mimosas and then you bring in roller skating and people are like, 'I haven't done that in a while, but I kind of want to'."
You would think that a team that has created an event that involved disco dancing on roller skates would be big fans of roller skating.
But in reality, Montgomery and the rest of the team rekindled their love of roller skating that they had as children after they starting hosting the brunch around the country.
"I even caved in and bought some rollerskates recently," Montgomery says.
"I didn't know that we had 190 pairs of the same ones and my boss was like 'Why did you buy those? We have so many pairs that you could have used'."
This is the first time The Brunch Club has hosted an event here in Canberra although over the past year or so they have hosted events such as Roller Disco Brunch in other parts of the country including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
But to try to expand offerings, The Brunch Club started eyeing the capital as a new location for their events starting with the Roller Disco Brunch.
The team also have a Mean Girls themed event - The Most Fetch High Tea Ever - scheduled to come to Canberra in November.
"We might not necessarily do the roller disco in the coming months but we'll probably bring it back annually," Montgomery says.
"We're doing a lot of brunch type events elsewhere and that will probably also bring the Canberra later on this year, obviously if the COVID regulations allow.
"We're more inclined to do more brunch-style events at the moment because of the regulations but hopefully we can do more fun-filled events sooner rather than later that aren't necessarily just brunches."
Roller Disco Brunch is on Saturday, October 17 at the Social Club in Kingston, with 90-minute sessions from 11am to 11pm.
Tickets are $65 from zip-tickets.com and include skate hire, bottomless mimosas and one pizza per person.
