Meet Corey Toole, a rugby sevens prospect who has emerged as one of the Gungahlin Eagles' most exciting weapons as they hunt for a drought-breaking premiership.

The young gun got a taste of life at the elite level when he played for the Oceania Barbarians at last month's Oceania sevens tournament which featured reigning world series winners New Zealand, Olympic champions Fiji, and Australia.

Now Toole will start at outside centre for Gungahlin in their clash with the Wests Lions at Jamison Oval on Saturday.

If Wests need a reminder of what he is capable of, just trawl through the highlights of Gungahlin's win over Tuggeranong last weekend.

A 90-metre dash downfield saw Toole set up the try which sealed the game. He used his impressive speed and footwork to dance around four Vikings men and then found teammate Tom Haddad to score.

It was one of the best tries of the season, and there is no doubt Toole is a valuable asset to the Eagles' side.

But teammate Jamie Mazzarol-Kotz thinks higher honours could be on the horizon after Toole surged onto the sevens radar.

"He's now got something set in his mind that he was to strive and succeed at," Mazzarol-Kotz said.

"So who knows? We could see him in the next Olympics [in Paris in 2024], fingers crossed."

Mazzarol-Kotz has scored a competition-leading 10 tries this season, with Toole the next best with nine.

But Mazzarol-Kotz says defence will lay the platform against Wests.

"It's a standard saying, you can't win without the ball, so defensively we just want to try to get up in their faces and retain the ball," Mazzarol-Kotz said.

"It's now just about trying to find that consistency and play through until the end of the year.

"We can't rely on our x-factor players too much, we need to work with them at times, and utilise them by giving them some more options."

Meanwhile, Queanbeyan will look to move a step closer to the top four when they face the ladder-leading Tuggeranong Vikings.

Canberra Royals will look for their first win of the season when they host the Uni-Norths Owls at Phillip Oval.
