A good thing to come out of lockdown is that it's been somewhat easier to get a meal from one of Canberra's top restaurants where a table booking can take you weeks. Let's take advantage of that while we can, but as soon as we can get back on site, let's do that too.
Here are a few of the best meal deals this week. Set the table, light a candle, get dressed up ... almost as good as a night out.
Monster Kitchen and Bar
Executive chef Matthew Bentley is ready to serve up Monster Inside. Well not literally, but his cutting-edge vegetarian a la carte menu is available for takeaway as well as an assemble-at-home option for those inspired to get on the tools. Think broccolini with gochujang, honey soy ginger and peanuts; and ricotta gnudi with romesco, dressed kohlrabi and espelette pepper.
The Monster bar can deliver as well, with pre-mixed cocktails and beverage bundles available. The $120 Session Starter contains two bottled cocktails, a six-pack of beer and one bottle of wine; the $270 Primo 6 includes six bottles of premium wine (including one Billecart NV); or go full out with the $450 One Stop Party Box which includes the above options with one bottle of house spirit with mixers.
Bar Rochford
Never been happier to hit Roch Bottom. The team from the city's coolest bar have been busy. Think pre-packaged cocktails in cute little 180ml bottles, a range of beers and ciders, or raid the extensive wine list. The dinner packs are great value, $55pp (minimum of two) and include house focaccia; cos lettuce with green sauce, fines herbs; burrata with pistachio pesto and blood orange; fusilli with gorgonzola and roast pumpkin; spaghetti and meatballs; and tiramisu. Vegetarian menu also available. The menu could change, new drinks will be switched up, keep an eye on socials.
Eightysix
Craving the banoffee pie with pretzels? Get in quick, the menu might be changing but we love the idea of being able to access all their favourites while we're at home. The salt and vinegar potato scallop has been popular, as has the black chicken with the buttermilk coleslaw. $5 delivery to selected suburbs and pick up available.
Rebel Rebel
Speaking of picnics ... we love the idea of Rebel Rebel's Aperol spritz to go and some Moonlight Flat oysters. Roll out the rug. Or at home share the 550g grass-fed rib eye steak with anchovy butter and finish it off with some pavlova with passionfruit and berries. Lash out and treat yourself to something from the wine list. You're worth it.
Italian and Sons
You could order-in five days a week and have something different, such is the menu here. Sovereign lamb lasagna for two on Tuesday, crispy duck legs and farro on Wednesday. Or order from the pasta menu (some of the fresh pasta and selected sauces, as well as tiramisu, are also available from Ainslie IGA, Deakin IGA, Cook Grocer and Wiffens at Fyshwick Markets). Or simply grab a pizza and some cannoli. The Aperitivo Box for two would be a fun picnic idea, some charcuterie, mixed olives, pickles, duck liver parfait, plus more, and negroni for two.
Chairman @ home
The Chairman Group's at-home offering features dishes inspired by home-style Hong Kong cooking; very comforting and fuss free and not your typical fare. All the components come labelled and pre-prepared; at home, just layer, heat and enjoy. Each menu comes with a charcuterie plate, main course, salad and dessert. Think Hong Kong-style baked pork chop with fried rice and a mixed leaf salad; and vanilla bean panna cotta with strawberry compote. Delivery to selected suburbs and contactless pick up is available. Keep an eye out on social media for changing menus and upcoming drinks offerings. Watch out for a collaboration between Lanterne Botanical and Underground Spirits; and at-home cocktails from Cicada Bar.
