The Big Picture: reader travel photos, June 28, 2014

We set our alarm for a 3:30 am wake up so that we could be on the Li River in time to see the sunrise. Navigating in a small raft along a picturesque section of the river we were amazed by the many craggy mist-shrouded peaks and unusual rock formations on either side of the river bank. Rounding a bend in the river we came across this traditional fisherman and his cormorants and were rewarded with this memorable image of Old China. The early start to the day was well worth it.

So bad it's good: when tourist attractions go wrong

A combination of three documents provided by the Centre de Estudios Borjanos on August 22, 2012 shows the original version of the painting Ecce Homo (L) by 19th-century painter Elias Garcia Martinez, the deteriorated version (C) and the restored version by an elderly woman in Spain.

From world-famous landmarks originally dismissed as monstrosities to bungled construction projects and half-baked theme parks, sometimes getting it wrong makes a site far more attractive.

This picture was taken in Stone Town, Zanzibar. I was entranced by this woman, who casually watched the world go by. I tried to get her to smile, with no success. Giving up, I tipped her for her help, and she broke out in a glorious smile. It was worth the wait.
