Canberra has jumped 16 places in the QS Best Student Cities 2015, the biggest jump of all six Australian cities represented.
It has been ranked the 21st best city in the world.
Paris took out the top honour, followed by Melbourne, London and Sydney.
Canberra scored very well in the 'student mix' category, according to the university rankings website, reflecting its large and internationally diverse student population.
The ANU, which ranked 25th in QS World University Rankings, was believed to have contributed to this.
The city's second strongest score was in the 'desirability' category, taking into measures of city life safety, pollution, tolerance and transparency.
Natural attractions also fared well despite the two-hour trek to the nearest beach.
Tertiary students make up 6.2 per cent of the ACT's population, according to QS.
Meanwhile, international students make up 29 per cent of students at QS-ranked institutions including the ANU and University of Canberra.
