The competition involves five randomly chosen audience members scoring each poet's efforts.

The rules of the poetry slam are two minutes on stage with your original work and no musical accompaniment.

Tahi Atea, who was a finalist in the Australian Poetry Slam last year will be performing on the first night back before she heads to university in AdelaIde to study dance.

The 20-year-old former Hawker College student may look young and fragile but her poems, including many with a political bent, are delivered with force and conviction.

Her subjects include the Soweto student uprising of 1976 to Syria from the perspective of a child.

"I've sort of been writing my whole life and found slam poetry in year 11 and have been performing it since," she said.
