On Sunday, a NSW police spokesman said the 60-year-old, who allegedly fired at passing cars and police officers before being shot, was yet to be charged.

The man has been under police guard at Canberra Hospital since the incident.

The police spokesman confirmed that officers found the weapons and ammunition when they raided the man's Jerrabomberra home at 4.35pm on Saturday.

The raid followed an incident in Queanbeyan earlier that morning. It ended with police shooting the 60-year-old in the hip at the BP service station on Lowe Street.

The confrontation began when six officers responded to multiple reports of a man firing a shotgun at passing vehicles on Queanbeyan's main thoroughfare, Monaro Street, about 3.50am.

Assistant Commissioner Peter Barrie said witnesses took cover in surrounding businesses as police found the man on Crawford Street, where he continued to fire the shotgun.

Assistant Commissioner Barrie said the man moved through town and into Lowe Street, where he confronted a police officer.

"The man refused to surrender at that point," Assistant Commissioner Barrie said.

"He was shot once in the hip, although at that point, he remained conscious and quite vocal."

Assistant Commissioner Barrie praised the actions of the officers involved, saying the man had fired at them, forcing them to take cover.

The incident is not believed to be terror-related.

A trail of blood and bullets was visible around Queanbeyan for several hours on Saturday after the incident.

A shotgun lay on the footpath outside St Gregory's Parish Church on Lowe Street, metres from a blood stain.

Shotgun shells were also strewn around a vehicle with a punctured front tyre and damaged side on Crawford Street.

More shotgun shells could be seen outside a barber shop on Crawford Street.

A NSW Police critical incident team is investigating the incident.
