Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said the issue did not discriminate.

"Research shows that LGBTIQ people suffer domestic and family violence at the same rates, or perhaps even higher, than the broader community," she said.

"Research also shows they can experience unique forms of abuse and may be reluctant to seek help."

The Not Now, Not Ever report included two studies which showed one-third of LGBTIQ respondents said they had been in a relationship with a verbally or physically abusive partner.

A 2010 study of male same-sex intimate partner violence found it occurred at similar rates to that of opposite-sex relationships.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics 2012 personal safety survey identified one in six Australian women had experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner.

The latest campaign features myths, such as: "I can't escape the violence because there's no safe accommodation for me."

However, the initiative points out: "Regardless of your gender or sexuality, there are a number of accommodation options that can be organised to help you escape a domestic and family violence situation and get access to help and support."

The campaign meets recommendation 14 of the Not Now, Not Ever report, and will deliver information and advice on the types of abuse that are unique to the LGBTIQ community and dispel misconceptions about support options.

McConnel MP Grace Grace said the insidious nature of domestic and family violence affected far too many LGBTIQ people.

"LGBTIQ families are not immune to the danger of domestic and family violence which is why it is so important to raise awareness of the issue and encourage people impacted by this terrible form of violence to seek support," she said.

AIDS Council Queensland executive director Rebecca Reynolds said awareness of intimate partner violence in LGBTIQ relationships was crucial so people could identify domestic violence and know where to seek help.

"This campaign will speak to a diversity of bodies, genders and relationships to ensure that all people feel visible and feel like they can access the support that they need, at the time when they need it," she said.

Ms Farmer said help would also be available for anyone seeking help for domestic violence over Christmas, with DVConnect not closing its doors over the festive period.

"Christmas, school holidays and the New Year period is often a time when sadly we see a spike in incidences of domestic and family violence," she said.

"This time of year we know families can experience additional pressures including extra financial costs, alcohol consumption, custodial disputes and spending more time than normal with family members and relatives.

"This can contribute to an increase in the number of reports of domestic, family and sexual violence across Queensland so it is important that people know where to turn to for help."
