Clubs ACT chief executive Gwyn Rees said members had been put on alert about the burglaries and warned to take action to avoid violence if the thieves escalated their attacks to include hold-ups.

The warning comes after a strikingly similar spate of robberies in 2015 culminated in two armed hold-ups, where a staff member was threatened with a sawn-off shotgun.

Mr Rees said the recent spree started at the Canberra Deakin Football Club about two weeks ago, with the thieves then moving on to the Canberra Irish Club and RUC.

The Harmonie German Club, The Sports Club Kaleen, and Italo-Australian Club were targeted over three consecutive nights this week.

ACT Policing confirmed it is investigating a number of aggravated burglaries at licensed premises across the ACT since July 13.

A police spokeswoman said in each incident, the offenders entered the club once trading hours ceased.

"While inside the licenced premise, offenders have target the ATM machines, and in some cases, taking the cash box from the ATM and then fleeing the location," the spokeswoman said.

Mr Rees said, in light of the burglaries, clubs had taken steps to limit the amount of cash kept on the premises and the main costs for the clubs involved had been for property damage.

The recent break-ins are similar to a spree in 2015, which saw more than a dozen after-hours burglaries on Canberra's clubs.

Matters then escalated to armed offenders twice storming clubs during opening hours, with patrons watching on as one bandit threatened a duty manager with a sawn-off shotgun at The Mawson Club.

In a separate incident, three armed men stormed the Rugby Union Club in Turner and made staff lie on the floor after opening a safe before they fled with cash.

ACT Policing held a security and safety seminar for club employees in the wake of the 2015 attacks.

At the time, Clubs ACT said it had been the first-time so many clubs had been targeted within such a short-timeframe.

Mr Rees said the recent spate of six break-ins appear to be linked.

"So much so we have been able to pick two of the clubs hit by the thieves and have alerted our membership to take steps to mitigate any potential impact," Mr Rees said.

But police said, while the method used to enter the licensed premise and the activity inside were similar, that did not necessarily mean it was the same offenders.

Mr Rees said there were concerns the burglaries could escalate to armed robberies, like in the 2015 spree.

"I do not want to see a repeat of a situation where, a staff member of a club has a weapon pointed at them," he said.

"However, we are actively working with ACT Police to ensure this doesn't occur."

ACT Policing is urging the community to report any suspicious behaviour and/or cars seen around licensed premises, especially after hours.
