Chris Klootwijk will be supported by cull opponents, who plan to hold a protest on Wednesday morning outside the court, signalling their anger over the arrest and the annual shooting of kangaroos in Canberra reserves.

Shooters killed 1689 eastern grey kangaroos last year; 168 more than the previous year, but down on the 2466 target. Another 701 joeys were killed.

The government secured a two-year cull licence last year. It is set to go ahead with shooting up to 2500 kangaroos this winter without having to get another licence and risk being delayed by court challenges from animal activists.

Planning Minister Mick Gentleman last week would not provide details about the 2016 cull.

Police alleged that Klootwijk, 70, repeatedly blew his whistle to frighten off animals and disrupt the cull at the Wanniassa Hills nature reserve last year.

He pleaded not guilty last year. The case will begin on Wednesday.

Police alleged that when they went to the Wanniassa Hills cull site last year, they heard a shot and then a loud whistle. When the shooters fired again, the whistle sounded again.

Klootwijk had said he was blowing the whistle to let the shooters know he was there.

Coalition of Animal Protectors spokeswoman Robyn Soxsmith alleged shooters moved from the Wanniassa reserve to the Rose Cottage horse paddocks without warning and only secured a licence for the new location after the event.

Her group had taken concerns about what she alleged was illegal shooting to police, the Ombudsman's Office and the Chief Minister.
