New data from the Bureau of Statistics shows how Australians are moving around the country, and how the population is continuing to age.
The ageing population trend will have continuing implications for health budgets, the size of the working-age population, housing and demand for skilled labour.
But the ACT had strong growth when it came to numbers of children. It recorded a 2.4 per cent increase last year of children aged 0 to 14 years.
The closest following state was Western Australia with a growth of 1.5 per cent, while Tasmania recorded a drop of 0.5 per cent.
Overall though, Australians are getting older.
Since 1995, the proportion of Australia's population aged 65 years or older has jumped from 11.9 per cent to 15 per cent.
Over the same period, the proportion aged under 15 years has fallen from 21.5 per cent to 18.8 per cent.
The median age of Australians – the age at which half the population is older and half is younger – has increased from 34 years to 37 years.
The ABS data also shows the number of people aged 100 or older has jumped 254 per cent in the past two decades.
There are now 4440 centenarians in Australia, up 550 in the last 12 months, with more than three times as many women (3400) as men (1000) in this age group.
There were 64 centenarians in the ACT, triple the number a decade ago and more than 20 times the number from two decades ago.
Meanwhile, the ABS data also shows how Australians are flocking to Victoria and Queensland – away from every other state and territory.
It shows only Victoria and Queensland recorded net interstate migration gains in the year ended 30 June 2015.
Victoria continued a recent trend of recording the highest net gain with 10,200 people, up from 8,800 people in the year ended 30 June 2014.
Queensland with 6400 people, up from 5800 people in the previous year.
Net losses from interstate migration were recorded in New South Wales (6600 people), South Australia (3800 people), the Northern Territory (3000 people), Western Australia (2000 people) the Australian Capital Territory (700 people) and Tasmania (500 people).
NSW still has the largest population with 7,618,241 people. Victoria comes second with 5,938,119, followed by Queensland (4,779,400) and Western Australia (2,591,585).
The ACT's population is nearing 400,000; it was recorded at 390,800 as of June 2015.
But Victoria's population is projected to overtake the population of NSW in by 2036.
The bureau estimates there are now 23,781,200 people in Australia, after an increase of 317,100 since June 2014, a growth rate of just 1.4 per cent.
The contribution to population growth for the year ended 30 June 2015 was higher from net overseas migration (53 per cent) than from natural increase (47 per cent).
