But the North Canberra Community Council said it was better to have noise pollution mainly in city centres rather than in the suburbs, where people weren't expecting it.
The noisiest suburbs of Canberra have been revealed in data obtained by the Sunday Canberra Times.
Almost 900 complaints have been made to the authority between January and December 9 this year, with the city holding the No. 1 spot with 43 complaints, the majority being from amplified music noise.
Belconnen came in second noisiest with 41 complaints. There was a four-way tie for third place with each of these suburbs receiving 34 noise complaints each: Braddon, Kambah, Ngunnawal and Turner.
For Braddon, the majority of complaints were filed because of building work noise.
For Kambah, Ngunnawal and Turner, amplified music noise was a major concern.
North Canberra Community Council chair Mike Hittinger said residents of city centres, such as Civic or Belconnen, had to expect a certain level of ambient noise.
He said he was more concerned about noise complaints from suburbs, where residents tried to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
"We've put together a letter to send to the government because there were some residents complaining about The Duxton at O'Connor shops ... it has a carrying capacity of 649 and something that is that big is inappropriate for a suburban centre," Mr Hittinger said.
"If you are going to have noise anywhere it's better it's consolidated in a city or town centre."
Belconnen Community Council chairwoman Tara Cheyne said the group had not received a particularly large number of complaints relating to noise but given the increasing mixed use of the area it would be understandable.
The quietest Canberra suburbs with no record of noise complaints were found to be Chifley, Dickson, Giralang, Symonston and Uriarra Village.
Macgregor had 23 noise complaints, predominantly from air conditioning, fans or heater noises.
