Pope's August 8 cartoon, A nation of lifters and leaners!, was announced as a Walkley Award finalist on Thursday night.
The image depicts passengers and staff tilting the "Budget Express" to give an unemployed kid a "leg up".
It was published after the federal government's sweeping changes to welfare payments for people under 30, forcing young people wishing to sign up for the dole to wait six months before receiving any money.
It was released after scores of people freed a man trapped between a train and a platform in Perth after the passenger slipped while attempting to board a carriage.
Pope is up against The Age's Ron Tandberg and New Matilda's Lindsay Foyle in the All Media Cartoon category.
His work is among 17 Fairfax Media nominations in the 59th Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism.
More than 1400 entries were submitted across all categories.
Walkley advisory board chairman Quentin Dempster said the 2014 Walkleys received a near-record number of entries.
"It is a testament to the standing of these awards in encouraging and recognising high standards in Australian journalism," he said.
The winners of the 59th Walkley Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Sydney on December 4.
