What started as a Facebook page in 2011 has now grown into an online community of close to 5000 where celebrities and their red carpet costumes are critiqued with more bite than a cranky Eastern brown and more pluck than Kevin Bloody Wilson.

"Mr Squiggle called and is suing for copyright," was how Fashion Critical described Angelina Jolie's Versace wedding dress.

To some red carpet commentators the simple aqua Calvin Klein dress Reese Witherspoon wore to this year's Golden Globes was "beautiful". To Fashion Critical it was "a bit Lorna Jane-ish".

"This strikes me as something someone might wear to the Olympics, when representing their country, in 79BC," was how Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery's Emmys gown was summarised.

There are whispers floating around Sydney's fashion circles that the founder of the page works in the industry. Not so, according to the page's administrator.

"The rumour doing the rounds is that I'm an elderly gent from Gundagai that earns an honest living as a street sweeper by day," Fashion Critical tells PS when pressed for details of the person, or people, behind the keystrokes.

"I do not have a background in fashion. I know nothing other than what I see in front of me. If it walks like a piece of shit, and talks like a piece of shit, it's a piece of shit. I don't care who the designer is."

However, unlike Rivers and Babe Walker – two guys and a girl who created a popular social media persona that parodies the Kim Kardashian Wests of the world – Fashion Critical is not ready to put a public face to the commentary. The detractors of the site, who are referred to as "bongas", are still having a hard time understanding that the aim of game is satire not subjugation. Comedy comes before cruelty and couture.

"It allows me the freedom to say what we're all thinking, without fear or retribution. It is a way to transcribe the thoughts we all have as we sit in our ivory towers," Fashion Critical says.

"Celebrities are lucky enough to have shitloads of money and not necessarily a whole lot of sense when it comes to fashion. They have stylists and designers throwing their wares at them. So this isn't about who they are as people. It's about that facade that they're creating. How they choose to present themselves to the world.

"In the early days I posted a picture of myself at my year 12 formal and tore myself to shreds. It was grand."

A watershed moment occurred recently when the page, which has built its audience from word of mouth and social media recommendations over three years, attracted more than 590 new fans in the hours following the AFL's Brownlow Medal.

The photos from the Brownlow which featured "tall, weird-looking men and pretty ladies sprayed orange in all kinds of ice-skating regalia" was Fashion Critical's most popular photo album. It was shared more than 300 times and received about 420 comments - possibly because the red carpet at Crown combined two of Fashion Critical's pet peeves, lace and sheer-bottom dresses. However, one thing was missing.

"Brynne Edelsten. She is my absolute fave. She has no boundaries and she brings us so much happiness. I'm sad she broke up with Grandma Geoffrey [Edelsten], that we don't get to see much of her any more," Fashion Critical says.

Interestingly, this year was the first time the infamous "Brownlow Burn Book" wasn't circulated. The notoriously nasty and derogatory PowerPoint presentation, created by an anonymous group, had become a tradition during the pictorial post mortem of the AFL's night of nights.

Nastiness, along with ridiculous poses like the "awkward lean", is frowned upon on Fashion Critcal. The page plays the clothes, not the woman, or man.

"I like making people laugh. I do not like or want to make people cry. I hope you all know this. I think you do, or you wouldn't be here. Thanks for playing and for 'getting it'," a disclaimer reads.
