Edward Graham Aldridge, 23, appeared before the ACT Supreme Court for sentence on Tuesday, having pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft.

The court heard Aldridge entered a Turner home via a window after first removing a fly screen in May last year. He then stole $2225 in property, including computers and cigarettes, before leaving through the back door.

Police arrested him the following month after his fingerprints were found on the window frame. Aldridge initially pleaded not guilty to the crime but switched his plea shortly before he was due to stand trial in the Supreme Court in August.

A pre-sentence report said Aldridge had committed the offence because he needed money to fund his drug habit.

The court heard the robbery came only three months after he was released from jail for burglary, theft and car theft. The crime put him in breach of a suspended sentence and good behaviour order.

Acting Justice John Nield said burglaries were easy to commit but resulted in damage, loss of property and a sense of violation for the occupant. The judge said there was no information before the court that indicated Aldridge felt remorse or regret for his crimes.

Justice Nield said Aldridge previously expressed a desire to mend his ways but had done nothing to prove he was a genuine rehabilitation prospect.

Justice Nield jailed the offender for the burglary and theft of property.

For the breach, the judge cancelled the orders and resentenced Aldridge on the previous charges of burglary, aggravated burglary, theft and car theft.

The total sentence was three years and three months, backdated to take into account time spent in custody.

Aldridge will be eligible for release in January 2015.
