Corey Power, 33, was found viciously beaten on a quiet street in the town of Young in the early hours of August 29 and police are still working to identify his attacker.
Despite the efforts of paramedics and doctors, he died in hospital a short time later.
The former Canberran had moved back to the NSW town less than a week before his death to be closer to his four-year-old daughter, his sister Phia Power said.
“That town’s got a very dark side,” she said.
Ms Power told Fairfax Media her brother had previously spent eight years in Young, working first as a cherry picker before finding regular shifts as a bricklayer.
Despite being a fearless and fun loving person, she said her brother had fallen in with a bad crowd.
“When we moved away from Young, it was a good thing,” she said.
“He had settled down a bit in Canberra.”
Ms Power believes it was a targeted attack that killed her brother, who she described as a “typical male” who would only get into an argument over football.
“They know each other, there’s no doubt,” she said.
“But there are just a few pieces of the puzzle that are missing. Social media will hopefully bring something out of the woodwork.”
Cootamundra Local Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector Paul Huxtable said police were trawling through electronic media and CCTV footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
“It’s not a smoking gun murder – it requires analysis of all the information and evidence,” he said.
“We’re confident that those who committed this crime will be brought to justice.”
Investigators revisited the scene on Friday, located just metres from Trevor Walker’s Wombat Street home.
The 62-year-old told The Young Witness he was having a coffee in the early hours of August 29 when a friend knocked on his door, telling him there was a man lying injured on the street.
He said he didn’t hear anything the morning of the murder, adding that his long-time home was reasonably quiet, with the exception of “the odd yahoo”.
The murder has left Mr Walker rattled, but Young Mayor Stuart Freudenstein said the majority of residents had returned to their normal routines.
“I think we’ve come to accept that these things happen,” he said.
Though Mr Power’s death has been mostly forgotten on the streets on the small town, his sister said the hard questions remain for his family and daughter Jaela.
“She’s going to get to an age where she’s going to want to know the ins and outs of everything,” she said.
“And as his family, we deserve to know too.”
