The additional lane was built as part of the ACT Government’s $14.7 million Parkes Way widening project, which is expected to be finished by September.
The lane, open between Clunies Ross Street Bridge and Glenloch Interchange, is expected to ease congestion and increase the capacity of Parkes Way between Glenloch Interchange and Edinburgh Avenue.
A statement issued by Territory and Municipal Services said cyclists would still be detoured from Parkes Way to the Lake Burley Griffin shared path, while drivers face a 60km/h limit.
Widening work is continuing on the Clunies Ross Street Bridge and Sullivans Creek Bridge and further sections are expected to open in July.
The project began in June last year.
Parkes Way carries more than 35,000 vehicles a day and the volume of traffic is forecast to increase to 40,000 vehicles a day by 2016.
