Sara Burke, trained at the Canberra Institute of Technology and now employed as a qualified hairdresser at La Bimbi Hair, took out the top prize at a ceremony at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
''I was shocked,'' said the 22-year-old who often spends weekends styling hair for photo shoots.
''It's good Canberra did so well because we often get a bad rap.''
It was the most successful year for ACT entrants in the Australian Training Awards. Aspiring nurse Gloria Davison, also a CIT trainee, won Vocational Student of the Year.
ACT government employee Daniel Helson, taught by the Australian Training Company, was named runner-up for the Australian Trainee of the Year Award.
ACT Education Minister Joy Burch said the results highlighted the high calibre of the ACT's trainees and apprentices. ''It is a great testament to the quality of the training they receive in the ACT from the providers here, especially from CIT,'' she said.
