The 24-year-old Chifley man is part of the 2012 Mongol Rally, in which more than 200 teams such as his will take whatever route they choose on an epic trip across Europe and Asia, all in the name of adventure and to raise money for charity.

Mr Walker, a barista, said as soon as he heard about the rally he knew he could not turn down the opportunity to be involved.

''[My team] wanted to do it before we got to an age where it got more difficult, and before we got too far into our careers,'' he said.

Mr Walker will fly to Europe next week to spend time visiting family and travelling with his girlfriend and parents, before his teammates join him in Britain.

Vehicles in the rally must have an engine size of 1.2 litres or less, so Mr Walker's team will be driving his sister's Fiat Punto, a car for which she will have no use when she leaves Europe after a stint living in Britain.

Mr Walker said they would spend a couple of weeks doing whatever they could to the car to prepare it for the trip, including new shock absorbers, springs and high-quality tyres.

He and his teammates, all from Canberra, then plan to leave London for Belgium on July 14, and to see as many countries as they can on their way across the Continent, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Latvia, Russia and Kazhakstan, before finally reaching Mongolia.

They had originally planned to head further south but decided to avoid possible difficulties crossing Iran.

Mr Walker said his biggest concerns were tricky border crossings and the car breaking down, but his team was at an advantage with one of its members, Simon Gibbs, a qualified mechanic.

The team hopes to raise up to $5000 for their nominated charity, One Girl, which works to educate young women in Sierra Leone.

Mr Walker said while his mum would be worried about him, he was looking forward to the adventure.

''It's stupid and fun at the same time,'' he said.
