According to a report, which appeared among many on the front page of The Canberra Times, the Southern Tablelands Regional Committee found its population had almost doubled in two decades.
As of the end of June, 1933, there were 4019 people in the now-city, compared with 7550 at the end of June, 1955; an increase of 3531 people.
The findings also earned Queanbeyan the title of "the second largest town in the Southern Tablelands". Goulburn had the largest population with 19,183 people, but it saw an increase of only 20 per cent between 1947 and 1954.
Queanbeyan had a 45 per cent population increase in the same timeframe.
Nowadays, the city has a population of about 38,000 people. Canberra's population recently sprinted past 420,000.
The report came as international and national news flooded the Times' headlines; the largest story of the day being the aftermath of riots in Poland against the Communist Party.
