A new kind of drive-in experience will roll into Canberra this August with the "Parking Lot Social".
The idea comes from the XL Event Lab, which has previously created Big Bounce Australia - an entirely inflatable theme park.
Event production and tour manager Tom Gay said that the Parking Lot Social builds upon the nostalgia of drive-in cinemas.
"We have taken it to the next level," he said.
"You are no longer going to just see a movie, you're now going to see a comedy show, you're now going to see a live band perform, you're going to play bingo, trivia and Car-A-Oke where we do a mass sing-alongs together."
The idea for the Parking Lot Social was born out of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for socially distanced events.
"Crazy times call for crazy solutions," Gay said.
"[At Big Bounce Australia] as soon as COVID-19 began, we started to see our numbers decline, then go to nothing."
"We decided to create a new concept to keep moving along and this is how the Parking Lot Social was born."
However this new style of event is a huge and risky experiment for XL Event Lab.
"Unlike Big Bounce Australia which was a proven concept, we are starting the Parking Lot Social in the UK, in the US and in Australia for the first time ever all around the same time," Gay said.
"We've never done anything like this before, we are definitely taking a risk."
The Parking Lot Social will include movie sessions, silent discos, trivia nights, bingo, Car-A-Oke, food trucks, live bands and stand-up comedy.
These events will be performed on a custom-made super-stage, alongside two 12-metre screens so everyone can see the action.
Music and comedy line-ups are yet to be announced to the public.
Additional kid-friendly sessions will be held during the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays.
Not only has social distancing been a key motivator for the creation of the Parking Lot Social, additional measures have been put in place to keep the environment safe.
"The whole thing is being socially distanced and how we create that environment to be safe, " Gay said.
"Things aren't actually going to be the same as it used to be but in a sense we have adapted to the new world we are living in."
"People will have tickets on their phones and we will scan it through their windows - no tickets to be bought at the door itself."
"It is one ticket per car and one person per seatbelt."
The Parking Lot Social will begin in Sydney and run from July 9 to July 19, before travelling across Australia over 10 weeks.
It will be in Canberra from August 20 to August 30.
Tickets are due to go on sale soon.
Early-bird registration is open for first release tickets.
