1. Flazeda
Canberra's newest performing arts hub opens its doors in Belconnen this weekend. Flazeda is a custom-designed performance space from Jazida Productions' Rachel Reid and is designed to support artists in alternate performing arts. As part of the launch event, there will be a day of free taster classes in burlesque, belly dance, Bollywood and other mediums, as well as an evening of entertainment. Classes run from 10am to 6pm, with bookings at flazedahub.com. The evening entertainment runs from 8pm to 10pm. To register for free tickets go to Eventbrite.
2. Mean Girls quote-a-long
Is it time to make fetch happen? Head to the National Film and Sound Archive to quote along to the classic 2004 teen film, Mean Girls. In what some hail to be the ultimate high school clique comedy, Mean Girls was written by Tina Fey, who stars alongside Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and a slew of Saturday Night Live regulars including Amy Poehler. It's the film that brought us lines like: "You go, Glen Coco", "She doesn't even go here" and "Get in loser, we're going shopping", making it the perfect film to quote along to. Friday, 8pm. 3. Don't Miss the Melody
Do you think you know Australian music? Head to the capital's newest music trivia show, Don't Miss the Melody, to find out how you really fare. The Smith's Alternative event promises to bring some extra pizzazz to the average trivia experience, as well as having prizes to be won and laughs to be had. Friday, 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm. 4. Kambri Film Fest
The second annual Kambri Film Fest continues this weekend, providing something for every film fan, big and small. Friday's offerings kick off with the Scooby gang, in the 2020 animation Scoob! at 3pm Saturday will screen Angelina Jolie's Maleficent: The Mistress of Evil at 3pm. Kambri Film Fest continues until February 7 with films such as Ride Like a Girl, Inside Out and Brave. Tickets are free. Registrations at kambri.com.au.
5. The Island
Aspen Island will be transformed over four days into the ultimate day-party destination with six four-hour sessions headlined by some of Australia's best acts. With a dance floor right next to Lake Burley Griffin, the event will feature the likes of Winston Surfshirt (DJ set), Young Franco, Dena Amy, Set Mo (DJ set), Kinder, Stace Cadet and more. Thursday and Friday, from 6pm to 10pm. Saturday and Sunday, from 1pm to 5pm and from 6pm to 10pm. Tickets are $49.95 from theislandcbr.com.
