What happens when Morrison, Porter and Shelton walk into your bedroom?

This is what will happen if the government accepts the recommendations of the Ruddock report, a review which only happened because those conservative shallow sooks (CSS) in government got their knickers in a knot after gay and lesbian Australians won the right to marry (yippee for them. Weddings are the best. Marriage also good. See, I’m a conservative). Immediately, the CSS thought everything would turn to dust, or bestiality, or somesuch. Instead, their plans remind me of what Nazis did to the marginalised.

As our glorious Jewel Topsfield revealed on Wednesday, religious schools would be guaranteed the right to turn away gay students and teachers under changes to federal anti-discrimination laws recommended by the government’s long-awaited review into religious freedom. Get that: proposed amendments to anti-discrimination legislation which would enshrine bullying and abuse. I suppose they think that’s free speech.

I really want you to think about that one. You as a taxpayer would be funding these schools to turn kids away, to make them feel as if they are less than. To isolate them. Is that where you want your money to go? The answer, surely, is no. That’s certainly the position of Derryn Hinch, who says that when he returns to the Senate on Monday, he will move a notice of motion calling for any private school that discriminates against a teacher or student on sexuality grounds should be stripped of all government funding and charity status.

This proposal is a nod to Nazism. Not even a nod. It’s a straight lift from the Hitlerian playbook. Mike Godwin, the man who brought us Godwin’s Law, is pretty clear about the comparison between contemporary Australian events and Nazi Germany.

“There was a lot of doctrine which was pretty overt about children, church and family and that poisoned anything which didn’t fit the paradigm.”

That is the role of this government, to poison and divide us, instead of nurturing and uniting us.

For those of you who don’t know, those who’ve avoided the internet for decades, Godwin’s Law says that in any protracted debate, someone will eventually resort to pulling out Hitler at which point the argument is over. But as Godwin, a US lawyer, writer and first staff counsel of the Electronic Frontier Foundation says, “There is writ large there is the fact that at some point in the development of Nazism it was decided to purge homosexuals and to persecute them.”

Which is what these devastating amendments would do. It would persecute young gay people who already, in many instances, struggle. Godwin's giving me a leave pass to break his rule because in this case, it is Nazism.

The worst thing – among many worst things – is this government’s completely perplexing priorities. It tosses money at private schools; provides generous and, perhaps even instant, tax cuts to small and medium business; yet it ignores climate change; for years denied the need for a banking royal commission; will never once mention domestic violence as a national epidemic; will allow au pairs into the country (now with added investigation into leaks but no apparent investigation into inappropriate decisions) but refuse to assist refugees.

It occupies itself with the trivial instead of the meaningful and it troubles us with this obsession with our private lives. I have an obsession too and that is with the moral position of the politicians who form this government; and those who influence them, including Lyle Shelton who is his own one-man sex monitor. He told Fairfax reporter Michael Koziol that it was OK for students to be gay but that schools should be allowed to expel students who have sex. Mmmm. Because there is one rule for straight people over 16 and another rule for gay people over 16. Plus, how will Shelton police this? Does he mean sex at school (in which case, folks, there are better places than school)? Or does he mean sex out of school, in which case, how the hell would he know and why is it any of his business anyway?

Christian Porter, the attorney-general, the man actually in charge of laws in this country, released a statement on Thursday saying that the Ruddock report did not recommend any changes. And that statement was utter, utter bollocks. As David Crowe wrote, the Ruddock report does call for changes to the law.

We must be clear with this government about these proposals – and that goes beyond endlessly saying they are related to people who are gay. That argument certainly won’t wash with any of the conservatives – witness failed former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s rejection of his own sister’s desire to get married.

No point appealing to these people’s hearts. They don’t have them.

But they do have voters. And those voters, so many of them, are so, so gay.
