Fresh from his victory in Dancing with the Stars, Samuel Johnson will be in Canberra next week for a charity golf day for the Love Your Sister Foundation.
It is being organised for the second year by cancer survivor Craig Glover, the ACT general manager of Rutledge AV, sponsor of the event at the Gungahlin Lakes Club on Friday, May 3.
Glover promised Samuel's sister, the late Connie Johnson, that he would raise $100,000 for their foundation to beat cancer.
He is just $36,000 off the target and well on the way to meeting it.
"We'll crack it on the day," Craig said, confidently.
The first $64,000 was raised mostly last year at the first golf day and at Bunnings sausage sizzles, all within three days of each other. That amount also included $27,000 raised in five cent pieces by Craig during Connie's Big Heart Project in 2017.
Craig, 33, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2001 when he was 16.
He underwent a year of chemotherapy and radiation before having the first stem-cell transplant at the Canberra Hospital in 2002.
Now in good health, Craig promised Connie before she died in September, 2017, that he would personally raise $100,000 for Love Your Sister, a foundation established by the Johnson siblings which passes the money to the Garvan Institute of Medical Research to help rid the world of cancer.
Asked how he felt about soon meeting that promise, Craig said he was pleased but not satisfied.
"I've made plenty of promises in my time, so to come good on one will be nice," he said, with a laugh.
"I can picture Connie giving me a big smile and a hug and saying, 'Thank you very much, but what's the next target going to be?'.
"I think Sam will be the same and we're working on setting a new fundraising target.
"I thought $100,000 would make a difference and I'm sure it will, but people are still dying from cancer and we're still a long way from beating this horrible disease.
"It's certainly not 'job done' from my end."
At the golf day, every player will have a chance to tee off with Sam, and get the all-important selfie with him.
