Police said the chickens were taken from the centre, on Summerland Circuit, Kambah, about 3am Saturday.
"The birds were later discovered at a nearby location with injuries consistent with being set alight. One was subsequently euthanized and the other is receiving veterinary care," police said in a statement.
"Police would like to speak with anyone who saw (or who may have dash cam footage of) people at or near the child care centre early on Saturday morning."
They asked anyone with information that could help them to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or at the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference 6404540. Information can be provided anonymously.
